Full Board Certification
The hospital or health system can receive additional recognition when multiple board members become certified. Three levels of board certification are recognized:
- One Star – 40 to 74% of board members are certified.
- Two Stars – 75 to 99% of board members are certified.
- Three Stars – 100% of board members are certified.
Active CHTLS will also receive discounts on THT’s Healthcare Governance Conference.

How to Become a CHTL
To become a CHTL, board members must complete the following:
- CHTL Application Fee, $125.
- Pass the CHTL exam with a score of 70 or higher.

Continuing Education Requirements
To have continuing education hours counted you must submit a record of attendance to THT staff; this may include a CE certificate of completion (preferred), event agenda, event handouts, etc. THT may require additional supporting documentation to be submitted and/or completion of THT’s CE completion form.
Education hours can be taken from a variety of sources, but approval is up to the discretion of THT staff. CE hours are accepted from professional organizations and associations such as the Texas Hospital Association, American Hospital Association, the Texas Organization of Rural & Community Hospitals, American College of Healthcare Executives, Healthcare Financial Management Association and other organization. CE may also be counted toward CHTL hours if educators and professionals are brought on site to educate the board at the hospital. If a CE completion form is not available from the education provider, you may complete this PDF form and send it into the THT office or complete this online form. All CE submitted is subject to approval from THT staff.

CHTL Exam
To take the CHTL exam, email [email protected]with proof of your continuing education credits. Once approved, a link to the online exam will be sent to you via email along with an invoice for the CHTL application fee ($125 for THT members and $175 for non-members). You will have three opportunities to take and pass the exam..
CHTL Application and Verification
Once you have completed and passed the exam you will be able to download and print the verification form for your CEO to sign. Return the certificate of completion and verification form to [email protected].
This program has a term of three years with an option to renew after the third year. Education must either be completed through approved sources or completed in specific categories.
